Bible Study Week : God - The Kingmaker (Psalm 110)

Greetings to our esteemed global readers. I trust you had a wonderful week.

This week, inspiration struck during a conversation with my brother, Bradley, reflecting on God's recent workings in our lives. I remarked, "God is a kingmaker; there's no situation or person that God cannot redeem, no matter how bad it looks." This isn't a comparison of Almighty God to a proverbial genie; rather, it acknowledges God's capacity to set things right through His own system of justice. We've explored this theme, termed "Job Moments," in previous Bible study sessions, delving into how God rescued Job from his seemingly hopeless situation. Numerous scriptures, such as Psalm 110, support the assertion that God is a kingmaker in the Bible. Today, we'll delve into this Psalm with support from other scriptures.

Let's begin with the enthronement of Christ as the "Prince of Peace," sitting at the Father's right hand, as described in Psalm 110. This prophetic psalm depicts how Christ would conquer death and sin. God the Father placed Jesus, the Son, at His right hand, making His enemies—powers, principalities, and dominions—His footstool (Psalm 110:1). The fulfillment of this prophecy is confirmed in Apostle Paul's letter to the Ephesians (Ephesians 1:20-21), long after Jesus' birth, crucifixion, resurrection, and ascension. God not only enthroned His beloved Son, whom He loved before the foundations of the earth, but also appointed Him as the permanent Priest—the Melchizedek priest (Psalm 110:4). In the Old Testament, the High Priest entered the Holy of Holies to make sacrifices on behalf of God's people. Christ, being righteous and pure, fulfills this role perfectly.

Unlike human priests, prone to error as seen in the tragic case of Aaron's sons in Leviticus 10, Christ is the ultimate sacrifice and intercessor (Melchizedek). Hebrews 4:15 emphasizes that God made Jesus, who knew no sin, was tempted like us, yet He did not sin. Thus, Jesus became both the Lamb and an intercessor who knew our infirmities. Hebrews 7-10 expounds on the superiority of Christ's work, particularly highlighting the nature of His sacrifice in Chapter 9. The use of His own blood, not the blood of animals, demonstrates the uniqueness of His sacrifice. Christ sits in the heavenly places, beside the Father, overcoming the kings (powers, principalities, dominions, and rulers of this world) in His formidable wrath (Psalm 110:5). He is not just the ultimate sacrifice and intercessor but also the judge (Psalm 110:6). This judgment is discussed in the New Testament (2 Corinthians 5:10), assuring that though we might not see the rewards of doing good in this life, we will receive our due beyond the grave. According to the passage, we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may be paid back according to what he has done while in the body, whether good or evil.

Similarly, those opposing Christ today, seemingly powerful and influential, will face judgment for their wickedness. God the Father has placed Christ on the throne, and He, the true King, rules with head held high (Psalm 110:7). Revelation 17:14 describes Christ, also known as the Lamb, as the one who will defeat those waging war against Him because He is Lord of lords and King of kings. Revelations 2:26-27 affirms that those who persist in overcoming this world and faithfully executing God's will until the end will inherit the iron scepter, a symbol of authoritative rule, just as Christ received authority from the Father. This is our hope in Christ - that when we serve our Lord as "faithful servants" in this life we will be crowned as kings at the end of the age.

All praise and glory to the King of kings.
