Christian testimonies: Taking the gospel to the streets Part 1

Sent to the Streets: Finding God at the Bus Stop

Sharing a Bible with a friend
Sharing a Bible with a friend

Greetings and Salutations

It is always a great joy and privilege to share what the Lord is doing through the gospel. Some time ago, a dear friend blessed me with a microphone and a speaker — tools that would soon become instruments in God’s hands.

At the time, I was praying earnestly, asking the Lord where He wanted to use me next. I didn’t realize that this small gift would become the beginning of a new season of ministry. Looking back now, I can see how God was guiding each step.

As you read this reflection, my prayer is that you too will be encouraged to share the gospel wherever God has placed you. Together, as the body of Christ, we are called to carry out the Great Commission — one conversation, one act of obedience, one heart at a time.

When God Answers Quietly

There was a season in my journey when I faced many trials. I often asked the Lord, “Am I still in Your will? Am I still doing what You called me to do?” My book, Sent: Becoming a Fisher of Men, had touched many lives, yet deep within, I sensed that God was calling me to something more.

It was during that uncertain time that I met a man named Russell Thompson. He had read my book and wanted to meet the person behind the pages. After several attempts to connect, we finally met one Friday afternoon.

“Brezhnev,” he said with a smile, extending his hand, “I feel like I already know you from your book.”

We took some time to talk about the things of God — our journeys, our burdens, and our passion for evangelism. I remember saying, half-jokingly, “It would be wonderful to have a microphone and a speaker one day, just to take the gospel to the streets.”

Russell leaned back, thoughtful. “A microphone and speaker, you say?” he asked.

“Yes,” I laughed. “But I’ll have to save up first — maybe I’ll find one at a secondhand shop if the Lord provides.”

He nodded but said nothing more, simply smiling in that knowing way that told me God was already working something out.

A few days later, Russell arrived in his Land Rover. As he opened the back, I saw Bibles, wooden crosses, and to my surprise — a microphone and speaker.

“Here,” he said warmly, placing them in my hands. “You said you wanted to preach. Now go do it.”

For a moment, I stood there speechless. I could feel the presence of God. “Russell, I don’t know what to say.”

“Just say what you always say,” he replied, smiling. “Preach the gospel.”

That simple act of kindness came during one of the hardest seasons of my life. I had just moved into the township, facing challenges from every side, but that gift reignited my sense of purpose.

A Bus Stop Becomes a Pulpit

Soon after, the Lord led me to a bus stop in Sunninghill. It was an ordinary place — noisy, dusty, filled with the rhythm of daily life — yet I felt a strong conviction that this was where I needed to be.

That bus stop became my pulpit.

Day after day, I set up the microphone and began to preach. Sometimes, people stopped to listen. Others waved as they passed. One man even jumped out of his car, ran up to me, and hugged me. “Thank you,” he said with tears in his eyes. “Thank you for doing this. We need to hear the Word.”

Not every encounter was as encouraging. Some mocked. Others used harsh words. A few simply ignored me. Yet even then, I reminded myself that the message wasn’t mine — it was God’s. My role was to speak; the rest was up to Him.

Later, a friend told me something that made me smile. “You’ve become a landmark in Sunninghill,” he said. “When people give directions, they say, ‘You’ll find it near the man preaching by the bus stop.’

That comment stayed with me. I realized that when we obey God, even our ordinary places — bus stops, sidewalks, workplaces — can become holy ground.

The Great Commission Still Stands

Standing in front of strangers with nothing but a microphone and faith isn’t easy. Yet every time I do, I feel the Lord’s quiet voice reminding me: “Whom shall I send?”

And I whisper back, “Here I am, Lord. Send me.”

You may not be called to street preaching, but your mission field might be closer than you think — your family, your colleagues, your neighbors. Perhaps God is calling you to share a Bible, offer a meal, encourage someone who’s hurting, or simply show kindness in a world that’s forgotten what love looks like.

Every act of obedience matters. Each step of faith builds the kingdom of God. Together, we are preparing the Bride of Christ.

A Final Encouragement

Let us keep one another in prayer. As Paul once wrote, “Pray for me, just as I am praying for you.” (Ephesians 6:19)

The Great Commission is not a burden but a beautiful invitation to walk with Jesus in purpose. So wherever you are, remember: you are sent.

Until next time, may the peace of God strengthen your heart, and may His presence go before you — in every place He sends you.

Scripture Reflection

“Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?’And I said, ‘Here am I. Send me!’” — Isaiah 6:8

When God calls, He never looks for the perfect — only the willing. He equips those He sends, often in ways we never expect.

Prayer

Father,

Thank You for calling us to be messengers of Your gospel. Help us to hear Your voice and obey it with courage and humility. Strengthen us to share Your Word — in the streets, in our homes, and in our daily lives. Use us as instruments of Your love and light in a world that desperately needs You.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen.
