Christian Testimony: Getting to share the gospel in Sutherland town

Updated: Jul 30, 2023

Greetings once more to the church of Christ representing the Kingdom of heaven. I am looking forward to sharing the events of what took place yesterday. I must admit it was such a blessing to have been privileged to be afforded an opportunity to witness the wonders of what the Lord is doing here in Sutherland.

Let me start of by saying that my morning started off, the moment I sat down to enjoy a cup of coffee and some oats for breakfast after spending some time in prayer. Seeing that the ever absent electricity was at my full disposal I intended to make good use of it. It was a little later that morning, that Elmi, a sister of mine in Christ, said that there was a man who was working at the clinic and was on his way to fellowship with us. It was a mystery what our meeting with this man would produce and so we began preparing for his arrival. Before long, he was heard from a stone’s throw away, cheerfully greeting Elmi who was at the time outside.

As he entered the room where I was sitting, I greeted him with a warm handshake before we exchanged names and taking a seat to have some coffee. He mentioned that his name was Jean and that he was working at the nearby clinic not so far from where we were staying. Well, he was quick to point out that each day he went past our house, he had been drawn by the red wooden cross which was laying outside and that his hope was to speak to us at some point out of curiosity, during our stay here in Sutherland. Ironically, yesterday became that day the Lord had ordained for us to meet and we were so glad he had come to chat with us.

It wasn't long before Tian joined in the conversation. I began sharing some teachings about Jesus with him and Elmi shared the gospel with him using gospel cards (a tool we often use to illustrate and present the gospel in picture form) . It was after we finished ministering to him that he opened up about his current dilemma of backsliding as a believer and how this meeting had come at the right time to remind him of his calling.

At that point he could not hold back his tears from falling. It was during that moment that we began to pray, seeking the Lord to forgive him and to work within him in this trying period of his life. After we prayed for him, he experienced freedom and began to feel lighter in his heart confirming that he had been battling a lot of thoughts in his mind, prior to meeting us. On that note, we thanked God for affording us this opportunity, during that moment in time, when a brother is feeling down, to speak words of divine wisdom to uplift him.

Afterwards, he went back to work overflowing with joy and feeling at peace. We could not help but share the joy that he experienced as he left with him.

Not long after that, we attended a pancake sale in Sutherland town, to share the gospel there with the community. It amazing how powerful it is to plant a seed and pray that the Lord will provide the increase. I stood there on that pavement for a greater part of the afternoon, sharing the teachings from the Bible with the locals. Being the last Friday of the month, the little town was a buzz, with a lot of contract workers from the windmill farm flocking in to do some end of month shopping.

I recall talking to one young man whose focus was on the music playing from the speakers of his phone. As I asked him about what his thoughts were on what would happen on the day of judgement, it became apparent to him that Jesus is the way, the truth and eternal life. No man can expect to see the Father before approaching him. I gave him a simple anology of someone attempting to cross the road, but unaware of the danger of an oncoming vehicle that might hit him. It is our responsibility to warn him beforehand of an incoming danger. By the same token, if you are in a position to warn someone about danger, wouldn't it be the best thing to do. To warn people.

It was a fruitful discussion that we had been engaged in and I believe that the conversations that followed afterwards produced a similar effect. This in retrospect, reminded me of Luke 10 and perhaps Matthew 10 as the disciples were sent out two by two to carry out the Kingdom assignment. It was amazing that, in spirit Jesus was with the disciples just as He is with us while we evangelise.

The day ended on a high note, as we got together for some supper back at the house, and spent sometime as a family to reflect on the events of that day. Yes, as a disciple you can expect to see changes and often times, that is where we see the growth process in our spiritual being manifested. It is more like observing a tree, a sign of growth in that tree, is closely linked to change in many ways.

I pray that our testimonies continue to bless you. Until next time it's goodbye.
